While many many new Pelicans continue to be discovered drenched in thick black oil, Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) is wondering if the oil spill was ever contained and cleaned up. And what about all the fish contaminated and exposed to the oil spill? Can the Government and Petrotrin advise us what is being done for them? Also what about the smaller (macro and micro) marine species that are also being affected? Even though they are small, these sedentary benthic (bottom feeding) organisms remain in the oil spill impacted areas and forms the basis/foundation of the marine food chain. The hydrocarbon and heavy metal toxins from the spilt oil bio-magnify and bioaccumulate (move up) in the marine food chain and will eventually reach the fish, which we all consume. The entire marine ecosystem is being contaminated by the estimated 23,000 barrels.
