Date: January 8 th, 2020
Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) have today written to the Right Honorable Prime Minister who is now also the Minister of Planning and Development, urgently reminding him of our country’s obligations under the United Nations Agenda 21, which includes the mandatory requirement to establish a National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD). Such a Council was promised since1998, and today, 22 years later the Council has not been established.
The Council would include members of Government, Business and Civil Society organizations, and would specifically embrace women and youth in the developmental decision-making process which is an important, inclusive and recognized step towards promoting transparency and accountability. This Council would strengthen our democracy by an inclusive approach so that all voices will be heard.
We have asked the Prime Minister/Minister of Planning and Development to urgently disclose when our Government would be in a position to advise the nation when the Council would be established and become operational. For too long we have been locked out. This international obligation has serious local and regional implications. FFOS urgently call on the right Honorable Prime Minister to step forward and advise us when would the Council be established.
Sincerely, Gary Aboud
