The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI)

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is a global standard to promote open and accountable management of natural resources. In each implementing country it is supported by a coalition of governments, companies and civil society working together. Countries implementing the EITI Standard publish EITI Reports that disclose the revenues and other information from extraction of the country’s natural resources.

The Trinidad and Tobago Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TTEITI)

Fishermen and Friends of the Sea is one of six Civil Society representatives on the 19-member Trinidad and Tobago multi-stakeholder EITI Steering Committee, under the chairmanship of Victor Hart.

As a member of the EITI, The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) will publicly declare annually all revenues received from companies engaged in the extractive industries and the companies, in turn, will publicly declare monies paid to GORTT. Discrepancies between the two reported figures, if any, will be subjected to an independent audit to reconcile the differences and the results published and widely disseminated.

FFOS is actively working with the remaining Civil Society representatives on the TTEITI Steering Committee to lobby for greater social and environmental transparency and accountability in the published reports.
